INTRODUCTION

Imagine waking up to the enticing smell of perfectly toasted bread, its warm, golden color beckoning you to start your day right. Now, add a touch of magic to this daily ritual with a smart toaster. This toaster isn’t just your regular kitchen gadget; it’s the key to turning your ordinary breakfast into a culinary adventure. With its innovative technology and modern design, it’s more than simply a toaster; it’s a breakfast companion that makes mornings more fun. 

The invention of toasters went as far as back as 3000 B.C. because some historians believe that the Egyptians invented the idea of drying their bread in front of open fires to prevent mold developing. But there are many indications of other ancient cultures being the first to make the idea of a toaster like the Roman Empire who had the same concept as Egyptians while the Ancient Greeks would toast bread as a tradition to praise their gods in hopes for long health.

But the invention of the first electric toaster was created by Alan MacMasters in 1893 while he was working for the London Underground which is the transportation tube system in London. The coils used for the toaster were usually for light bulbs. Because of this, it created too much resistance and became too unreliable to use which would cause fires.

 However, credit should be due towards the first successful toaster maker, Frank Schailor created in 1909. It was a Model D-12 which was created through a special type of wire combining nickel and chromium. This combination was soon to be called Nichrome invented by an engineer named Albert Marsh. Frank Schailor took his invention of Nichrome to produce an electric toaster. However, at the time, it could toast each side of the toast at once because of lack of energy at the time. Ana Lopes Ramos says “To give an idea of how limited electricity was then, it was generally not even available during daylight hours.” Therefore, the toaster would only be used in restaurants. 

Because of this successful invention, it led to many other designs of the toasters like the pop-up toaster and heat-resistant plastics toasters. Which leads to Eric Norman’s creation of the Revolution InstaGLO R180 Toaster which is a smart toaster.

Eric Norman’s motivation stemmed from his desire to combine cutting-edge technology with everyday kitchen appliances. He realized that toasters had remained mostly unaltered for many years and saw the opportunity to design a toaster that not only served wonderful toast but also did so with style and flair. His goal was to create a toaster that could transform the most mundane of breakfast rituals into something amazing.

The InstaGLO R180 features a sleek, modern design that will complement any kitchen décor. Its premium stainless steel finish adds a touch of sophistication to countertops. If you want your kitchen to look more modern and tech-savvy, then this is the perfect toaster for it. It has advanced toasting which results in better-tasting toast and it is fast which is convenient for those who have to go to work early.

It has a beautiful stainless steel body with one or two pairs of vertically aligned slots, as well as an easy-to-use touchscreen control panel with a high-resolution display. What distinguishes it is its Wi-Fi connectivity, which allows for remote control via a smartphone app and allows users to modify browning levels, toasting intervals, and even particular functionalities for foods such as bagels and pastries. This clever kitchen companion has alerts, automatic pop-up features, and safety features, making it more than just a precise toaster but also a smart and efficient complement to the contemporary household.

It plays a crucial role in enabling the exchange of data between devices through serial communication protocols such as RS-232, RS-485, or UART.
  4. Temperature Sensor – A temperature sensor is a device that detects temperature and turns it into an electrical signal or digital output that can be used for a variety of purposes. A central processing unit (CPU), memory, input/output interfaces, storage, and supporting hardware elements make up most smart devices today.

Touchscreen – A touchscreen is a flexible and user-friendly input interface that enables users to interact with electronic devices by directly manipulating graphical components on a display screen. It functions as both an input and output device, giving a smooth and tactile way of manipulating and receiving data from various electrical devices. The touchscreen on a smart toaster is normally an LCD or OLED display panel that is built to last and respond to touch inputs. It is conveniently placed on the front panel of the toaster for easy access.
  2. Power Cord – A power cord is an important electrical component that connects an electrical appliance or gadget to a power source, usually a wall socket or power distribution system.
  3. Toaster Slots – Toaster slots are crucial parts of a toaster that hold slices of bread, bagels, pastries, or other objects for toasting. Most toasters include two or four slots, allowing users to toast many foods at the same time.

  2. Select Bread, level 4 as it is recommended for the first time.
  3. Place food inside toaster slots. If its a bagel or English muffin, insert the slices facing inward.
  4. Select food type by tapping the image that matches the food you are inserting for the best result.
  5. Choose your meal setting: Select the option that corresponds to the dish you wish to toast.
  • Fresh – for goods that are kept on the counter or in the refrigerator.
  • Frozen – for goods that are kept in the freezer.
  • Reheat – for items that only need to be warmed up without further toasting or browning.

  2. The START button will start flashing when it is ready for your food to be toasted.
  3. Once the “Crisping” cycle has begun, a countdown timer will show at 10 seconds.

The purpose of using a smart toaster is to improve the toasting experience by leveraging sophisticated technology and connection to match current consumers’ tastes and time. A smart toaster provides precise control over toasting settings, allowing customers to adjust the degree of browning to their own preferences. This guarantees that each piece of bread or other food is perfectly toasted. Smart toasters may be incorporated into a wider smart home ecosystem, allowing them to function in harmony with other connected appliances and systems. They may, for example, link with a coffee machine to provide a whole morning experience.

Conclusion

As we continue to see the growth of household appliances in the age of smart homes, the smart toaster stands as a monument to the possibility of boosting everyday chores through connectivity and automation. With the option to set toasting preferences, remotely monitor progress, and even get alarms, it demonstrates the simplicity and efficiency that technology can provide to our everyday routines. Finally, the smart toaster is an excellent combination of classic kitchen tools with cutting-edge technology. The smart toaster provides a quick and delightful toasting experience, from its precise control of temperature and easy user interface to its connectivity choices and safety measures.

Reflection

I didn’t know much about smart toasters before, but recently, I got curious and decided to learn more about them. It was fascinating to discover how these kitchen appliances have evolved with technology. I found out that a smart toaster is not just a regular toaster, it’s a high-tech device that can do much more.

One thing that amazed me was the touchscreen control panel on smart toasters. I learned that it’s like a little computer screen on the toaster where you can customize how you want your toast. You can choose the browning level, set the toasting time, and even select different settings for things like bagels or waffles. It’s so user-friendly that you can control it from your smartphone, which is super convenient.

I also realized that smart toasters prioritize safety. They have features like automatic pop-up when your toast is ready, and some even have cool-touch exteriors to prevent burns. Learning about all these features made me see how smart toasters are not just about toasting bread but also about making our lives easier and more efficient in the kitchen. It’s incredible how technology is transforming even the simplest kitchen appliances. 

Another eye-opener was the connectivity aspect. Learning that smart toasters can connect to Wi-Fi and be controlled through a smartphone app was mind-boggling. Imagine being able to start toasting your breakfast from your bedroom or even while you’re still at the grocery store – that’s a level of convenience I hadn’t anticipated from a toaster. Plus, the notifications it sends when your toast is ready make it impossible to forget about it and end up with burnt toast.

Furthermore, this assignment has taught me more about toasters and the invention of them. The peer review session has helped me understand other people’s ideas and expanded my knowledge on technology that we use on a day-to-day basis.
